Big data – a golden opportunity for journalism to transform.
In her opening remarks at the discussion session, journalist Nguyen Thi Kim Hai, Deputy Head of the Culture Department - News Division, Vietnam Television, presented a paper on the topic "Big Data and Content Personalization: A New Direction for Journalism - News Division".
According to journalist Nguyen Thi Kim Hai, in the digital age, journalism is witnessing profound changes in how the public receives information. Today's readers, especially the younger generation who grew up with technology, expect content to be customized to their individual needs and preferences, similar to other digital experiences in life. This reality poses a major challenge for news organizations: If they do not adapt and provide personalized experiences, they risk losing readers to digital platforms and social networks that always "understand" their users.
Referring to the role of big data in the transformation of journalism, journalist Nguyen Thi Kim Hai stated that big data refers to the processing of a very large and complex set of data that traditional data processing applications cannot handle. Big data includes data analysis, collection, monitoring, searching, sharing, storage, transmission, visualization, querying, and privacy. This technology is becoming a "launchpad" for journalistic innovation.
During the workshop, delegates from various media organizations focused their discussions on the role of journalism in the digital age, digital technology, digital data, etc., emphasizing the mission of journalists in meeting the demands of the Party, the country, and the nation in responding to the requirements of these trends.
The mission of revolutionary Vietnamese journalismin the digital age

Speaking at the conference, journalist Le Quoc Minh, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, stated that with the strong development of science and technology, artificial intelligence (AI) is playing a particularly important role in the digital transformation of journalism in particular and is an inevitable trend for media organizations to innovate and develop.
However, to successfully implement digital transformation and effectively leverage the strengths of AI, press agencies in general and the Party's press system in particular must continuously innovate to meet the increasingly high demands of readers by constantly thinking, innovating, creating, and producing new, attractive journalistic products to attract readers, especially in the context of the strong development of social media today.
Highly appreciating the digital transformation efforts of press agencies and the Party Newspaper system, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association Le Quoc Minh expressed confidence that press agencies will make strong progress, meeting the increasingly high demands of readers in the new era.
The Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association also stated that the press system is currently undergoing a restructuring and streamlining process in accordance with the Politburo and the Secretariat's directives. The principle of restructuring is to consolidate local press and television agencies under one umbrella. In some localities, a single media agency will be formed by merging multiple units; the number of staff and reporters will reach hundreds, inevitably creating significant impacts on organizational structure and professional operations. While media agencies will undoubtedly face many challenges, this restructuring will also open up new opportunities for development.
Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Le Quoc Minh, affirmed that despite significant changes following restructuring and streamlining, the Party Newspaper system has maintained its pivotal role in the revolutionary press system; continuing its mission of guiding the public and driving the strong development of the Party Newspaper system in the new era.
Proactive and responsive to trends.

Speaking at the conference, Comrade Nguyen Doan Toan - Member of the Standing Committee of the Hanoi City Party Committee, Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Hanoi City Party Committee - expressed his honor that Hanoi is hosting the Northern Region Party Newspaper Conference - an event of practical significance to celebrate the country's major holidays and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press Day.
“This conference, themed ‘Promoting the tradition of revolutionary journalism, pioneering digital transformation, and accompanying the country into a new era,’ is an important forum for Party newspapers to exchange and share experiences, and together find solutions to improve the quality of journalistic activities in the context of comprehensive digital transformation,” said the Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Hanoi City Party Committee.
Sharing the impressive development results of Hanoi in recent years, especially in 2024 and from the beginning of 2025 to the present, the Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Hanoi City Party Committee affirmed that the Hanoi press and the press nationwide have made very important contributions to these achievements. He expressed his deep gratitude to the team of journalists nationwide for their continuous attention, support, and companionship with the capital city over the past years.
Comrade Nguyen Doan Toan emphasized that Hanoi City deeply recognizes the particularly important role and position of the press in the cause of building and developing the capital city and always pays attention to and creates all favorable conditions for the press to operate effectively.

Referring to the content of the seminar, the Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Hanoi City Party Committee, Nguyen Doan Toan, shared that we are living in a new era - the era of digital transformation, where digital technology has become the foundation of development. In this context, revolutionary journalism needs to constantly innovate, adapt, and seize opportunities to affirm its role and fulfill its mission in the new situation. Digital transformation is not only an objective requirement but also an opportunity to improve communication effectiveness, increase reach, and maintain its role in guiding public opinion.
“Organizing this seminar demonstrates the proactive and astute approach of Party newspapers in the Northern region in general, and Hanoi Moi Newspaper in particular, in anticipating trends. This is an opportunity for media agencies to exchange experiences, disseminate best practices, and contribute to improving the quality of operations in the context of streamlining the apparatus and reorganizing the press according to the Central Committee's direction,” the Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Hanoi City Party Committee observed.
