Hong Kong has its first female chief executive.
Former Hong Kong Chief Secretary Carrie Lam became the first female Chief Executive, succeeding Leung Chun-ying, following the election results on March 26.

Carrie Lam, 59, won 772 out of 1,194 electoral votes and was elected Chief Executive of Hong Kong after voting took place on the morning of March 26 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Thus, Carrie Lam was elected in the first round after surpassing the minimum of 601 votes. According to the South China Morning Post, the former chief executive of the special administrative region was previously considered the more likely winner due to her support from Beijing.
In theory, the 1,194 electors from the Electoral Commission represent 7.3 million voters from all walks of life in Hong Kong. However, Hong Kong media reports indicate that the majority of these individuals were chosen because of their pro-Beijing stance.
Meanwhile, former Finance Minister Tsang Chun-hwa enjoys little trust from Beijing despite his considerable popularity in Hong Kong.
According to the Election Commission's previous announcement, in the recent nomination round, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor received 580 nomination votes, Tang Chun-wah received 165 votes, while Ho Kwok-hung received 180 votes.
