After fatally stabbing Mr. Tho, Hai went to the stream and attacked Mrs. Vieng Thi Duong (born in 1952), Mr. Tho's mother, while she was bathing. He then used the knife to take the lives of Mr. Tho's wife and son, Ms. Le Thi Yen (born in 1987), and their child, Lo Anh Chung (born in 2014), while the child was being cradled on his mother's back.
On July 19, 2015, Vi Van Hai was arrested by the investigative police agency of Nghe An province in coordination with the Department of Criminal Investigation of Social Order - Ministry of Public Security.
At the investigative agency as well as at the first-instance trial, Vi Van Hai confessed to all his crimes. Hai stated that he committed the crime because Thọ chased, beat, and insulted him, and also because Thọ claimed that Hai and Thọ's wife had a romantic relationship. Hai became angry and lost control, leading him to commit the crime.
On September 30, 2015, Vi Van Hai was sentenced to death by the Nghe An Provincial People's Court. The defendant filed an appeal to the High People's Court requesting a reduction of his sentence.
At the trial, Vi Van Hai failed to present any reasons for a reduced sentence. After hearing the presiding judge's explanation, Vi Van Hai withdrew his appeal and accepted the verdict of the first-instance court.
