Huong Giang Idol: 'I was right to decide to undergo gender transition'

The runner-up of the second season of The Amazing Race is always grateful to fate for giving her so many opportunities to shine by breaking free from her male image.

- Huong Giang often gets irritable during the races. How does this damage her image in the eyes of the audience?

- Participating in The Amazing Race allowed me to travel to the furthest corners of the country and try out all kinds of jobs and professions. I don't know how many fans I've gained thanks to The Amazing Race, but I know they've supported me everywhere, praising me for being intelligent and decisive. Besides those who love me, there are probably many who don't. But that's truly the most authentic version of myself. When I'm too focused, I want my teammates to focus too and follow instructions, so being a bit grumpy actually helps me get things done better.

Huong Giang is praised for becoming more and more beautiful and charming.

- In The Amazing Race, which challenge impressed you the most?

- I was most impressed by the leg of the race in Con Dao. Starting in 4th position, we were the only team that decided to attempt a leapfrog – the most difficult task in the entire journey – to gain an advantage in the final leg. The leapfrog task took place at Bai Nhat beach. One member would stand on the shore and solve a math problem. The last three digits of the problem were the answer to the code. I used to joke that I could visualize numbers in the air, so calculating 1234x4321 wasn't difficult. However, when I saw Criss struggling in the sea for 5 hours, I couldn't hold back my tears. Initially, I thought leapfrog was an advantage for our team, but now it turned out to be such a tough task.The decision to choose the most challenging task in the Amazing Race helped the Red team make a spectacular breakthrough and take the lead..

- Despite having broken up with her boyfriend, they both agreed to participate in The Amazing Race. How will racing together again affect their relationship?

- Criss Lai and I relived the old races, and memories flooded back. After the first episode, Criss took the initiative to reconcile and express his feelings for me. However, I'm quite reserved and I have no intention of falling in love again. I decided to participate in The Amazing Race 2016 to have fun and relax. Because I was so clear about that, Criss was sometimes upset during the race. His mental and physical health issues led to our coordination not being as smooth as before.

Huong Giang Idol has registered to participate in the "Travel with S-bike - Safe Driving" competition organized by The Gioi Dien Thoai (Mobile World) and Samsung.

- After 4 years of establishing yourself in Vietnamese showbiz, what have you gained and lost from being a celebrity?

- It has brought me so much. First, it has fulfilled my childhood passion and dreams. Secondly, financially, I can live comfortably and independently thanks to the career I love. The only loss, perhaps, is the sacrifice of my private life. But I think it's a fair trade-off.

- You're a very versatile artist, but any new activity, even your relationship with your boyfriend, is judged by the public from a transgender perspective. How does this affect you?

- Transgender people who constantly feel insecure about themselves or deny being transgender will fail. The key is to be yourself. You can be whatever you want, but don't try to act like a girl, and don't be ashamed of being transgender. Be stylish in the way you want and do everything that reflects your personality. I've lived that way in showbiz, and I think I'm lucky to have that naturalness.
