Hyundai Ioniq 9 BigTime concept: Off-road transformation of Calligraphy

Hyundai collaborated with YouTube channel BigTime to create the Ioniq 9 BigTime concept for SEMA: a raised suspension, BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, white OZ Racing wheels, roof lights, and brown-beige decals inspired by the 1970s.

Hyundai unveiled the Ioniq 9 BigTime concept at SEMA, a collaboration with the YouTube channel BigTime, focusing on off-road styling and enhanced off-road capabilities. Based on the four-wheel-drive Ioniq 9 Calligraphy, the concept features a raised suspension, BFGoodrich all-terrain tires wrapped in white OZ Racing rims, roof-mounted auxiliary lights, and a brown-beige livery reminiscent of the 1970s. This is a demonstration model and is unlikely to directly influence a commercial product from Hyundai.

BigTime concept: SEMA concept based on Ioniq 9

The Ioniq 9 is Hyundai's newest electric vehicle, launched earlier this year, and is not originally designed for off-road use, with a standard ground clearance of 6.9 inches. Jeremiah Burton and Zach Jobe of BigTime collaborated with Hyundai to create a bolder look and slightly enhanced off-road capabilities for the Ioniq 9, in preparation for its SEMA show.

Upgraded suspension, BFGoodrich tires, and white OZ Racing rims.

The most significant upgrade on the Ioniq 9 BigTime is the raised suspension. Hyundai hasn't announced the exact increase, but images show enough ground clearance to accommodate the large-tread BFGoodrich all-terrain tires inside the wheel arches. These tires are fitted to white OZ Racing rims, giving the car a distinct rally-car feel and contributing to the overall style of the build.

With large off-road tires and a raised suspension, the Ioniq 9 BigTime can move more nimbly on lightly rocky terrain, while also improving approach and departure angles compared to the standard vehicle. However, this remains primarily a concept focused on visuals and performance; Hyundai has not revealed any further mechanical refinements beyond the suspension and wheels.

Roof-mounted auxiliary lights and brown-beige decals inspired by the 1970s.

The Ioniq 9 BigTime is fitted with roof-mounted auxiliary lights to aid visibility when driving at night on trails. The exterior features a brown-beige livery reminiscent of the 1970s, along with a large Hyundai logo on the hood and prominent BigTime lettering on the tailgate and fenders. According to the BigTime team, this color scheme is inspired by the 1977 Kenworth cabover tractor they purchased for the channel the previous year.

Ioniq 9 Calligraphy platform: two AWD motors, 422 hp

This build is based on the Ioniq 9 Calligraphy – the top-of-the-line configuration, starting at $76,590. This version uses a twin-motor, four-wheel-drive system, producing 422 hp and 516 lb-ft (approximately 700 Nm) of torque. On the standard model, the 6.9-inch ground clearance indicates the Ioniq 9 isn't a pure off-road vehicle; therefore, BigTime's suspension and tire upgrades primarily provide a rugged appearance and improved handling on rough terrain.

Set within the SEMA landscape: the off-road SUV trend.

This year's SEMA saw a wave of off-road SUVs/crossovers. Toyota upgraded the Corolla Cross Hybrid with the Nasu Edition and fitted a modern V-6 engine into a classic Land Cruiser. Nissan introduced the Dune Patrol based on the Armada, prepared the Frontier Rapid Runner for riverside journeys, and partnered with Forsberg Racing to create a classic Patrol with 1,000 hp. The Ioniq 9 BigTime added color, affirming the emotionally charged approach of electrified builds.

Utility value: just enough for a conventional style, emphasizing individuality.

From a practical standpoint, the BFGoodrich off-road tires improve grip on gravel and hard surfaces; the raised suspension provides better ground clearance over low mounds; and the roof-mounted lights are useful for night driving. However, since no significant mechanical changes have been announced, the Ioniq 9 BigTime is best suited for light roads, while also catering to personalization and style preferences.

Conclude

The Ioniq 9 BigTime concept doesn't redefine the off-road capabilities of electric SUVs, but it successfully "off-road-izes" a road-legal vehicle with well-placed upgrades: suspension, tires, lighting, and styling. This project, a collaboration between Hyundai and BigTime, serves as a reminder that with a few selective modifications, the Ioniq 9 can take on a more adventurous and playful appearance, although the impact on future commercial vehicles is likely minimal.
