Sport Mail reports that the English Football Association (FA) may impose retrospective punishment after reviewing slow-motion footage of events that occurred during Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.
Accordingly, both Ibrahimovic and his teammate Tyrone Mings of Bournemouth could face a three-match suspension. If this penalty is enforced, Ibrahimovic will miss the Premier League matches against West Brom and Middlesbrough, as well as the FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea.
The clash between Ibrahimovic and Mings occurred at the end of the first half. First, the Bournemouth defender stepped on Ibrahimovic's head while the Manchester United striker was lying on the ground. Then Ibrahimovic elbowed his opponent while jumping to contest the ball. Neither player received a direct penalty from referee Kevin Friend.
Following the match, Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney called on the FA to punish Mings. According to Rooney, collisions during challenges are normal, but stepping on an opponent's head while they are already on the ground is unacceptable.
Meanwhile, manager Jose Mourinho wants things to blow over quickly. He declared that Ibrahimovic is "a big man and doesn't cry over what has happened."
