Indonesia joins BRICS
Indonesia has become a full member of BRICS, according to an announcement from the Brazilian government on January 6th, which holds the rotating BRICS presidency until 2025.
"Within the framework of Brazil's chairmanship of BRICS, which began on January 1 and will last until December 31, 2025, the Government of Brazil today, January 6, announces the official accession of the Republic of Indonesia to BRICS as a full member," the announcement stated.

Indonesia's candidacy received approval from the group's leaders at the Johannesburg summit in August 2023 via consensus; however, accession would follow the presidential election and the formation of a new government in the country.
Earlier, on December 20 last year, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira declared that BRICS was approaching a scale equivalent to the G20.
President Vladimir Putin, in a live broadcast combined with a press conference, emphasized that many countries are showing interest in developing BRICS, because all decisions within the organization are made by consensus. The Russian leader also noted that this alliance is not a tool to counter the West, but operates in the interests of its member states.
