Indonesia receives its first batch of Rafale fighter jets from France.
On January 26, Indonesian Defense Ministry spokesman Rico Ricardo Sirait confirmed to Reuters that the country had officially received its first three Rafale fighter jets from France.
These are pieces of equipment included in a multi-billion dollar defense procurement contract signed between Jakarta and Paris in 2022.
According to the Ministry of Defence, these three aircraft landed at Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base in Pekanbaru, Sumatra Island, on January 23rd and are ready for combat deployment. Three more are expected to be delivered later this year.
This agreement is part of a massive order for 42 Rafale aircraft manufactured by Dassault Aviation. With the arrival of the Rafale, the Indonesian Air Force hopes to gradually replace its outdated aircraft, creating a more modern and mobile air defense network.
Under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto, a former special forces commander, Indonesia is implementing a strategy of aggressively increasing defense spending.
Not stopping at fighter jets, Jakarta also ordered frigates and submarines from France, becoming Paris's largest arms customer in Southeast Asia.
However, the Rafale is not the only option. To ensure long-term national security and avoid dependence on a single supplier, Indonesia is pursuing a multipolar defense foreign policy. The country is considering purchasing the advanced F-15EX fighter jets from the US; it has already signed a contract to purchase 48 KAAN fifth-generation fighter jets from Türkiye. Recently, Indonesia has also discussed with Pakistan the possibility of purchasing fighter jets and attack drones (UAVs).
