Instagram launches new interactive map: A battle of wits with Snap Map.
Instagram launched a location-sharing map feature, allowing users to discover content by location, and also introduced Reposts and a global Friends tab.
Instagram launches new interactive map: A direct competitor to Snap Map?
Instagram Maps, the new map feature, officially launched in the US by Meta on Wednesday, allows users to share their nearest location and discover content by location. This is seen as a move to directly compete with Snap Maps, a feature that currently has over 400 million monthly users.

Instagram Maps is disabled by default and only updates location when the user opens the app. While it doesn't support real-time location updates like Snap Maps or Apple's Find My, it still allows sharing your location for up to an hour via direct message.
Explore content by location and add "Notes" to the map.
With Instagram Maps, users can:
View stories, reels, or posts that friends and creators have uploaded at a specific location.
Discover activities such as festivals, restaurants, and events in the area in real time.
Attach "Notes"—short messages (similar to status updates)—directly to the map so your friends can see them.
This new feature promises to attract a group of users who previously loved Zenly, the social mapping app that Snap acquired and then shut down in 2023.

The "Reposts" feature: Instagram is learning from TikTok and X.
In addition to maps, Instagram also introduced Reposts, a feature that allows users to publicly share posts and reels.
Reposted content will appear in your friends' feeds and in the Reposts tab on your profile.
Users can add short notes when reposting to express their feelings or thoughts.
This feature is seen as a combination of Twitter's retweet (X) and TikTok's content sharing.

The "Friends" tab in Reels has been rolled out globally.
After testing in the US, Instagram officially expanded the "Friends" tab on Reels globally. This tab displays:
Reels that your friends have liked, commented on, shared, or that you created yourself.
It helps users easily track their friends' activities and content preferences.
Users can hide their interaction activity, including likes, comments, and shares, if they want to maintain privacy. Additionally, Instagram also offers the option to turn off the visibility of activity for specific individuals.
