Inter Miami are in talks to sign midfielder Nicolas Fonseca.
To find a replacement for Sergio Busquets, Inter Miami has submitted an official offer to defensive midfielder Nicolas Fonseca of Club Leon (Mexico).
Target to replace Sergio Busquets
Inter Miami is taking significant steps in the transfer market to strengthen its squad following the departure of key players, particularly the retirement of midfielder Sergio Busquets. With Lionel Messi remaining central to their plans, the DRV PNK Stadium team is actively seeking a new defensive midfielder and has targeted Nicolas Fonseca, currently playing in Liga MX for Club Leon.
According to TyC Sports, Inter Miami has submitted an official offer to Club Leon for the signature of the Uruguayan midfielder. Negotiations are underway between the parties, with the expectation of reaching an agreement soon.
Fonseca's professional capabilities
Nicolas Fonseca is a quintessential defensive midfielder. He began his career at Novara in Italy before returning to South America to play for Montevideo Wanderers, River Plate (Uruguay), and then River Plate (Argentina). In 2024, he joined Club Leon for a reported transfer fee of around $2 million.
During the 2025/26 season, Fonseca played 15 matches for Club Leon in the Liga MX Apertura phase, including 13 starts. Although he didn't score or provide assists, his main role was to ensure balance in the midfield, linking the defense and attack.
At the international level, Fonseca has made six appearances for the Uruguay national team under coach Marcelo Bielsa, including World Cup qualifying matches and friendlies. This makes him a potential candidate for the 2026 World Cup squad.
Competition from Europe
Inter Miami will have to act decisively in this deal, as Fonseca is also attracting interest from European clubs. According to Infobae, Real Oviedo of Spain is one of the potential destinations. Notably, Real Oviedo and Club Leon are owned by the same group, which could give them an advantage in negotiations.
For Fonseca, a move to Europe could improve his status and increase his chances of competing for a spot in the 2026 World Cup. Conversely, joining Inter Miami would offer the opportunity to play alongside Lionel Messi in an ambitious MLS project. The Uruguayan midfielder's future is expected to be decided in the coming weeks.
