Inter Miami targets Matko Miljevic: The former US international, who was once expelled from MLS, is set to partner with Messi.
Following their MLS Cup 2025 victory, Inter Miami is pushing to bring midfielder Matko Miljevic back to the US from Huracán to fill the void left by their key players.
Inter Miami is actively preparing for the new season by targeting Matko Miljevic, the attacking midfielder who is shining in the Argentine league playing for Huracán. After winning the MLS Cup 2025, David Beckham's team needs quality personnel to replace key players like Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba who have retired, as well as to compensate for the departures of Baltasar Rodríguez and Tadeo Allende.

According to transfer expert César Luis Merlo, Inter Miami has made initial approaches to Huracán. While they haven't submitted a formal offer, the Florida club considers Miljevic a top target in their midfield rebuilding plan. To complete the deal, Inter Miami needs to offer a compelling price, as Huracán previously rejected a $2.8 million offer for 80% ownership from Racing Club.
Talent and a controversial past at MLS
Born in Miami, Miljevic possessed great potential and was called up to the US national team (USMNT) by coach Mauricio Pochettino in January 2025. He scored on his debut, helping his team win 3-1 against Venezuela. However, the midfielder's career in North America ended in controversy while playing for CF Montréal.
In September 2023, MLS unilaterally terminated Miljevic's contract following a serious disciplinary investigation. The player was found to have used a false name to play in a local amateur league in Quebec while recovering from a meniscus injury. This culminated in allegations of involvement in an on-field altercation, including assaulting an opponent and spitting, resulting in a lifetime ban from that amateur league.
The challenge at Chase Stadium
Miljevic's potential return to play alongside Lionel Messi is generating mixed opinions. While his form at Huracán is undeniable, his past disciplinary troubles remain a question mark for local fans. With negotiations for Giovani Lo Celso still ongoing, Miljevic is seen as a strategic backup option or a combative addition to Inter Miami's ambitions of defending their title.
