IO Interactive lays off staff after Xbox cancels Project Fantasy.
Despite 007: First Light achieving record sales of 3 million copies, IO Interactive still had to cut staff due to Microsoft terminating its funding agreement for the online RPG project Project Fantasy.
IO Interactive, the studio known for the Hitman series, has just announced plans to cut staff. This decision comes shortly after Microsoft, through its Xbox division, reportedly terminated its funding and publishing agreement for Project Fantasy – an ambitious online role-playing game (RPG) project.
The paradox behind the resounding success of 007: First Light
IO Interactive's job cuts came as a major surprise to the tech and video game community, as the studio had just recorded impressive growth figures. Their latest game, 007: First Light, sold 1.5 million copies on its first day of release and reached 3 million copies after two weeks.
From a critical standpoint, 007: First Light received very positive reviews, with a Metacritic score of 84/100 and a positive feedback rate of 90% on Steam. However, the commercial success of the James Bond franchise seems insufficient to offset the financial void left by the withdrawal of a major partner like Xbox from the long-term project.
The breakdown in the agreement with Xbox.
According to Bloomberg, the partnership between IO Interactive and Xbox for Project Fantasy officially ended on June 30th. This was a new intellectual property (IP) project that Microsoft had previously committed to funding and exclusively releasing.
In an official statement on social media platform X, IO Interactive shared: "We are forced to adapt to the new reality and its short-term consequences, including personnel decisions. The studio is committed to providing maximum support to affected employees during this challenging transition period."
An Xbox representative also confirmed to Bloomberg that Microsoft's gaming division is undertaking a "review of investments to focus on top priorities." This is part of Microsoft's large-scale internal restructuring plan, with further job cuts in the gaming industry expected in July.
The future of Project Fantasy
Despite losing financial resources from Microsoft, IO Interactive affirms its 100% commitment to Project Fantasy. The studio emphasizes that this is a world and an IP that they are particularly passionate about. "This amazing universe will definitely be released to the public in the future," a studio representative stated.
IO Interactive's persistence with the project suggests the studio is seeking new fundraising methods or alternative publishing partners to replace Xbox. However, in the context of a tightening of spending in the video game industry, this will be a significant challenge for the Danish developer.
