What new colors will the standard iPhone 17 come in?
Apple is reportedly testing two new colors for the base iPhone 17 lineup: purple and green, but only one will be officially chosen. The competition between the two colors is keeping the tech community eagerly awaiting its conclusion this fall.
According to renowned Apple leaker Majin Bu, Apple is currently developing two new color variants for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus, both standard aluminum-framed models. The two colors mentioned are Purple and Green. However, only one of them will likely be available in September.
Majin Bu stated that Apple is currently leaning towards purple, and according to internal descriptions, it's a "vibrant," modern color with a strong personality. The purple version is said to pair very well with the aluminum chassis, a factor that could directly influence Apple's final choice.

“This is a vibrant, modern color, perfect for those looking for a device that reflects their personal style,” Bu shared. Meanwhile, the green color is described as “fresh and natural, ideal for those who prefer a minimalist yet striking style.”
Both colors have great market potential; however, sources indicate that only one will make the final list, and it's highly likely to be purple.
Purple: A safe and proven choice.
If Apple does choose purple, it wouldn't be a very risky decision. In the past, purple iPhone versions have appeared and received positive feedback from users.
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 both launched purple versions during their mid-cycle releases, creating quite a sensation. With the iPhone 15, purple was even included as a base color from the start.
Meanwhile, the green version is less common and, if it does appear, is usually considered a "secondary" option, for users who want something more unique than a neutral color but not too flashy. While still appealing, green has never achieved the same level of popularity within the Apple community as purple.
Therefore, considering consumer preferences and historical precedent, purple has a significant advantage, not only because of its visual prominence but also due to its proven popularity across previous generations of iPhones.
It's not just about the colors: the iPhone 17 is a comprehensive upgrade.
Although the color competition is attracting the most attention, the standard iPhone 17 still boasts several significant improvements that are drawing the attention of the tech world.
One of the biggest upgrades is the 120Hz screen refresh rate, a first for the basic iPhone line. This means smoother swiping and touching, more vibrant motion effects, and improved battery performance thanks to the ability to flexibly adjust the refresh rate.
In addition, the iPhone 17 is expected to feature the latest A18 chip, delivering more powerful performance, better support for AI applications, and advanced image processing capabilities.
Additionally, Apple is also experimenting with a new camera design featuring a single camera module housed in a pill-shaped, horizontal bump running along the width of the back of the device—a rather novel design compared to previous models.
All these changes suggest that Apple is seeking to "redefine" the standard iPhone line, not just as a stripped-down version, but as a more attractive option, approaching the Pro line but at a more accessible price point.
Although nothing has been officially confirmed, leaks surrounding the iPhone 17 paint a promising picture. The return of the purple color could create a new wave among young users, while Apple's addition of premium features to the basic line will open up more options for mainstream consumers.
However, until Apple officially unveils it at the September event, everything remains speculation. Will purple truly win the "color race"? Will the iPhone 17 be the most worthwhile upgrade in years? The answer will be revealed in the coming months.
