What new colors will the standard iPhone 17 have?
Apple is reportedly testing two new colors for the base iPhone 17 lineup: purple and green, but only one will be officially chosen. The competition between the two colors has the tech community eagerly awaiting the conclusion this fall.
According to a source from the famous leaker specializing in Apple products Majin Bu, Apple is currently developing two new color versions for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus, both of which are standard aluminum-framed models. The two colors mentioned are Purple and Green. However, only one of them will have a chance to "hit the shelves" in September.
Majin Bu said Apple is leaning toward purple, and internal descriptions describe it as a “vibrant,” modern, and bold color. The purple version is said to pair well with the aluminum chassis, a factor that may have directly influenced Apple’s final decision.

“It’s a vibrant, modern color that’s perfect for those looking for a device that’s a little more personal,” Bu said. Meanwhile, the green color is described as “fresh and natural, perfect for those who prefer a minimalist yet bold style.”
Both colors have great market potential, however sources say that only one will make the final cut, and it will most likely be purple.
Purple: The Safe and Proven Choice
If Apple does indeed go with purple, it wouldn’t be too risky a decision. Purple iPhone versions have appeared in the past and received positive feedback from users.
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 were released in purple during their mid-cycle releases and created quite a stir. With the iPhone 15, purple was even included in the list of primary colors from the beginning.
Meanwhile, the green version rarely appears and when it does, it is often considered a “secondary” option, for users who want something more unique than neutral but not too outstanding. Although it still has its own appeal, green has never created the same strong impact as purple in the Apple community.
Therefore, in terms of user taste and historical precedent, purple has a greater advantage, not only because of its visual prominence but also because of its proven popularity through previous generations of iPhone.
More than just color: iPhone 17 gets a comprehensive upgrade
Although the color competition is attracting the most attention, the standard iPhone 17 still has many significant improvements that make the technology world pay attention.
One of the biggest upgrades is the 120Hz screen refresh rate, which is a first for the basic iPhone line. This means smoother swipes, more vivid animations, and improved battery performance thanks to the ability to adjust the frequency flexibly.
In addition, the iPhone 17 is expected to be equipped with the latest A18 chip, providing stronger performance, better support for AI applications and advanced image processing capabilities.
In addition, Apple is also testing a new camera design with a single camera cluster placed in a pill-shaped horizontal convex block, running along the width of the back of the device, a fairly new design compared to previous models.
All of these changes suggest that Apple is looking to “redefine” the standard iPhone line, not just as a stripped-down version, but as a more attractive option, approaching the Pro line but at a more accessible price point.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, the leaks surrounding the iPhone 17 paint a promising picture. The return of purple could create a new wave among young users, while Apple adding premium features to the basic line will open up more options for ordinary users.
But until Apple officially unveils it at its September event, it’s all speculation. Will purple really win the “color race”? Is the iPhone 17 the most worthy upgrade in years? We’ll have the answers in the next few months.
