Iran attacks Diego Garcia military base with long-range ballistic missiles.
The Hill reported that Iran recently launched a ballistic missile targeting the Diego Garcia base from a distance of 4,000km, far exceeding the officially stated range, in response to military pressure from the United States.
Iran has just carried out a ballistic missile attack on a joint US-UK military base on Diego Garcia island, located approximately 4,000km from its territory. According to a report from The Hill, this action demonstrates that Tehran possesses missile technology exceeding the 2,500km range it had previously officially announced.

Combat effectiveness and weapons technology
Preliminary data indicates that Iran used two ballistic missiles in this attack. Military experts believe these may be a new version of the Khorramshahr missile. However, the attack did not achieve its objectives due to technical problems and the enemy's defense systems.
Specifically, the first missile malfunctioned and disintegrated in mid-air. The second was most likely successfully intercepted by an SM-3 anti-aircraft missile from the garrison before reaching its target. Although it failed to inflict direct damage, the incident drew significant attention to Tehran's ability to reach targets further than anticipated.
The strategic importance of Diego Garcia Island
The Diego Garcia atoll air base plays a crucial role in the U.S. Strategic Air Force operations in the Indian Ocean. It is the regular deployment site for some of the most modern bomber aircraft, including the B-52, B-2 Spirit, and B-1B Lancer.

Iran's move is seen as retaliation after reports that the United Kingdom allowed the United States to use air bases at Fairford and Diego Garcia for "defensive" operations. Previously, coordinated attacks by the US and Israel against Iran related to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz had pushed regional tensions to their highest level.
Assessing the ability to penetrate defense systems.
Despite demonstrating the ability to reach targets 4,000km away, this event shows that Tehran still faces significant difficulties in confronting the multi-layered US missile defense network. To overcome this dense protection and vast geographical distance, Iranian missile forces need a significant improvement in the reliability of their equipment, rather than simply increasing their range.
Currently, US forces maintain a high state of combat readiness in the region to deter similar disruptive attempts in the future. According to The Hill, neutralizing the recent attack demonstrates that the SM-3 defense system remains effective against long-range threats.
