Iran attacks US warships with missiles and drones in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a large-scale attack using missiles and drones targeting US warships transiting the Strait of Hormuz on the evening of May 7 (local time). This is seen as a swift retaliation by Tehran following tensions that have arisen in the Gulf of Oman.

The developments of the IRGC raid.

According to the Fars news agency and the IRGC's Sepah media channel, the attack began on the night of May 7th with the participation of multiple squadrons of UAVs and missiles. Iran claims that the US warships violated the ceasefire and were forced to withdraw after Tehran's attack. A senior Iranian military official accused US military aircraft of previously launching an unprovoked attack on an Iranian oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman.

Iran asserts that its armed forces remain on high alert and are ready to neutralize any threat to its territorial waters and strategic shipping lanes. Videos released show a series of UAVs and missiles being launched repeatedly at night, targeting maritime objectives.

The US response and retaliatory airstrikes.

Contrary to information from Tehran, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) asserted that no US warships were hit. CENTCOM stated that its defense systems thwarted attacks from Iran. Simultaneously, the US military conducted "self-defense strikes" targeting Iranian military facilities to protect forces operating in the region.

According to Fox News, the US airstrikes focused on the port areas of Qeshm and Bandar Abbas. However, Washington emphasized that these actions were localized defensive and did not signify a resumption of large-scale hostilities. Currently, the Strait of Hormuz – a route that carries 20% of global oil – remains on high security alert.
