Iraq warns of risk of 'regional war'

This is the latest statement of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi broadcast on state television on October 5.

At a press conference on October 4, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi responded to the decision of the Turkish Parliament last week; accordingly, expanding and extending the mandate allowing military operations against terrorist organizations in Iraq and Syria for another year.

“We have asked Turkey more than once not to interfere in Iraq’s affairs. I am concerned that Türkiye’s adventurous decision could turn into a regional war,” Prime Minister Abadi said.

“The move by the Turkish leaders is unacceptable and we do not want a military confrontation with Türkiye,” Mr. Abadi added.

The Iraqi parliament also voted on a resolution condemning the recent decision of the Turkish parliament.

Turkey said it deployed troops to a military base in northern Iraq late last year as part of an international mission to train and equip Iraqi forces to fight the Islamic State group, which controls large swathes of territory on its southern border around the city of Mosul and in neighboring Syria.

However, the Iraqi government asserted that it had never invited such a force and considered the Turkish army to be invaders and occupiers.
