According to CNN, citing a US defense official, soldiers preparing to launch an attack to retake Mosul from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) discovered the missile after it landed outside the West Qayara base.

According to an unnamed U.S. military official, no one was injured in the attack. He also stated that hundreds of U.S. soldiers are currently stationed at West Qayara Air Base.

CNN reported that no U.S. soldiers have yet shown symptoms of exposure to mustard gas. CNN also added that one U.S. official stated the mustard gas component in the missile was of "low purity" and "low armament," while another official commented it was "ineffective."

The Associated Press quoted an official as saying the recent missile attack was a minor military action. He added that a small group of U.S. soldiers found a black, slimy substance on the missile debris. An initial test showed it contained residue of mustard gas, but a second test came back negative.

The missile fragments have now been sent to a laboratory for further investigation.
