The European Border Agency (Frontex) has warned that the Islamic State (IS) has acquired a large number of blank passports in Syria, Iraq, and Libya, and with these passports, they could infiltrate Europe in an uncontrolled manner.

Speaking to the German newspaper "Sunday World" on December 20, Frontex director Fabrice Leggeri stated that terrorists obtaining blank passports could create real security problems, as they could blend into the current large and difficult-to-control flow of migrants entering Europe.

Mr. Leggeri said: "In a country at war like Syria, no one can guarantee that documents, which may appear genuine on the surface, are actually issued by the authorities of that country or belong to a legitimate passport holder."

According to the German newspaper, IS has seized numerous government buildings in cities across Syria, Iraq, and Libya, acquiring tens of thousands of blank passports as well as machinery for printing travel documents.

With the stolen passports, extremists can legitimize travel documents to blend in with refugees entering Europe. Alternatively, they can sell these stolen passports on the black market for between $1,000 and $1,500 each.

The above information comes as European officials have just been informed of a list of lost passport serial numbers from Syria and Iraq. According to diplomats, the list includes approximately 5,000 passports in the Rakka and Deir al-Sor provinces of Syria, as well as around 10,000 in the Anbar, Ninive, and Tikrit regions of Iraq.
