Israel and Lebanon reach conditional ceasefire agreement.
On the morning of June 4th, Israel and Lebanon agreed to implement a conditional ceasefire following US-mediated talks in Washington, emphasizing the importance of respecting national sovereignty and rejecting outside interference.
According to the joint statement released, a prerequisite for implementing the ceasefire is that Hezbollah forces must completely cease all firepower.
Despite lacking formal diplomatic relations, Israel and Lebanon have agreed to establish "pilot zones" on the ground. In these zones, Lebanon's regular armed forces will have exclusive control of the territory, resolutely eliminating the presence of all non-state armed forces to ensure security.
Furthermore, the negotiating nations reaffirmed that the future of relations between Israel and Lebanon must be decided by the two sovereign governments. They also unequivocally rejected any attempts by any state or non-state force to hold Lebanon's future hostage.
These diplomatic developments come just days after US President Donald Trump said both countries had committed to taking steps to de-escalate tensions. Representatives from both countries are scheduled to meet again this week, starting June 22nd, to further negotiate political and security roadmaps toward a comprehensive peace agreement.
Despite reaching common ground at the negotiating table, the situation on the ground between the two sides remains extremely complex. Fighting continued on June 3rd, with Hezbollah claiming to have carried out missile attacks targeting northern Israel.
Conversely, Lebanese officials reported that Israeli airstrikes in the south of the country had killed at least nine people, including two medical personnel. This fact poses a significant challenge to efforts to monitor and maintain the ceasefire in the coming period.
