During questioning, Chanh stated that she lived a nomadic life and was addicted to gambling. A few months ago, through an intermediary in Ho Chi Minh City, she met Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, 50 years old, over the phone and was invited to live with her in Phan Ri Cua, Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province. There, Chanh frequently visited Ms. Lan's house. Seeing that the homeowner wore a lot of gold and lived alone, she conceived the idea of ​​murdering and robbing her.

To create an alibi, on November 28th, Chanh pretended to take a bus back to Hue to visit family, but in reality, she rented a room elsewhere. On the evening of November 30th, after carefully observing her surroundings, Chanh entered Mrs. Lan's house to carry out her plan.

The female suspect confessed to hitting the homeowner on the head with a pestle. Seeing that Ms. Lan was still resisting, Chanh strangled her to death. The killer stripped Ms. Lan of all her jewelry and took other valuables, then used a rag to wipe away the traces on the floor before leaving. Chanh sold the stolen items while on the run.

Late on December 12th, 12 days after committing the crime, Chanh was arrested at a hotel in Trung Son area, Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh City. "When apprehended, the suspect was carrying a small knife. Chanh said he intended to continue murdering the hotel receptionist to rob money at the counter," a leader of the Binh Thuan Provincial Police said.

According to Colonel Thật, the suspect had a well-planned scheme, making it difficult for the investigation team. Police screened more than 100 suspected individuals. "Phan Rí Cửa is a rather complex area because there are many drug addicts and thieves, so we had to screen a large number of people," Colonel Thật said.

During the investigation, authorities determined that among those who frequently visited the victim's home was a woman with a Hue accent. However, two days prior, this woman was seen on National Highway 1 catching a bus back to her hometown. "She has an alibi regarding the timing, but we are still being cautious and not overlooking it," Colonel Thật stated.

Unexpectedly, the investigation team received a tip that Chanh was still loitering in Phan Rí Cửa after November 28th. The team tracked down the address of the person who introduced Chanh to the victim's uncle on Nguyen Xi Street, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City. Initially, this person was uncooperative, but later confessed that the "female criminal" had stopped by to ask for a ride to a crossroads in Vinh Loc A commune, Binh Chanh district, and then she left on her own. Following the trail, the police raided the hotel and arrested Chanh.
