Thief who stole over 2.7 billion VND caught because the bag of money was too heavy.
Lowering himself down to where the four safes were located, Thanh unlocked them and put the money into his backpack. Because the sum of over 2.7 billion VND was so heavy, he struggled to carry it, waking up the security guard.
The Tan Phu District Police (Ho Chi Minh City) are currently taking statements from Nguyen Van Thanh (22 years old, residing in Tan Binh District) to investigate his alleged theft of property. Thanh is suspected of stealing over 2.7 billion VND from a safe at the Xanh supermarket.
During questioning, Thanh confessed that because he worked in the supermarket, he knew every nook and cranny of the offices and the security camera system, allowing him to break in without leaving a trace.
Furthermore, he knew that banks were closed during the extended April 30th holiday, so the supermarket accountant had to leave all the sales money in the safe. To prepare for potential discovery, he had prepared an electric stun flashlight, a stun gun, and other weapons to defend himself against pursuers.

To carry out his plan, after work on May 1st, Thanh took a backpack containing rope, gloves, a flashlight, a stun gun, a hammer, a lock-picking tool, along with food and water, and climbed onto the supermarket's dome to hide.
Waiting until midnight on May 2nd, when the supermarket security guards were asleep, the suspect crawled through a ventilation hole and used a rope to lower himself down into the cash room.
After gaining access to four safes, Thanh used a crowbar to break the lock and disable the combination. The suspect saw that the safes contained many stacks of large-denomination bills, so he took them and put them in his backpack.
The backpack full of money was too heavy for him to carry and climb the rope to escape through the ventilation shaft.

After a moment of thought, Thanh decided to carry the bag of money and escape through the front door. When he opened the front rolling door, the noise woke the security guard, who shouted for help and alerted the residents to apprehend the suspect along with the stolen money, totaling over 2.7 billion VND.
According to an investigating officer, the suspect was only 1.6 meters tall and small in stature, while the bag of money weighed two-thirds his body weight, making it difficult for him to carry the loot away.
