Ben Needham, a boy from Sheffield, South Yorkshire (England), went missing on July 24, 1991, at the age of 21, while on holiday with his family on the island of Kos.

Ben's family then launched a search operation, but to no avail. They blamed the Greek authorities for not acting promptly and decisively.

New information reveals that the boy may have been crushed by an excavator while playing nearby.

Last May, investigators from South Yorkshire returned to Kos to reopen the investigation. A witness on the island told police that on the day the boy went missing, Konstantinos Barkas, driving an excavator on a farm near where Ben was playing, may have accidentally caused his death.

Excavator operator Barkas died of stomach cancer last year. However, Barkas's wife, Varvara, strongly denies any accusation that her husband caused Ben's death.

According to South Yorkshire police, the excavation could take 10-12 days because samples of "unusual" soil still need to be tested.

Since the boy went missing, many theories have been put forward about his fate, but his mother, Kerry Needham, has always believed that one day she will be reunited with her son.

"I never thought Ben was dead, not even in my worst nightmares," Kerry told the Daily Mirror.

However, investigators on Kos Island say Kerry should also "prepare for the worst-case scenario" when conducting the excavation.
