The Giang River originates from the Pu Mat mountain range, located close to the Vietnam - Laos border, flowing through Con Cuong, Anh Son and Thanh Chuong districts of Nghe An province. However, the most beautiful section of the river is from Pu Mat mountain to Pha Lai irrigation dam in Mon Son commune (Con Cuong). The river meanders through the green forest across two Dan Lai villages, Khe Bung and Co Phat. This place has the specialty "Mat Giang river fish", a stream fish that the locals call "pa khinh".

About 3 km upstream from Pha Lai dam is a pristine beach with tree canopies hanging down to the riverbed, creating a very romantic landscape. On the stream bank are flat rocks, stacked next to each other as if created by human hands. Occasionally, there are bamboo rafts floating downstream, like a cheerful highlight in the middle of the green and quiet river.

If you go early, you still have enough time to go upstream of the Giang River to the Dan Lai village to learn about the customs of the ethnic minority community that only exists in Con Cuong district. Before entering this area, one thing you need to do is the border area entry procedures at Mon Son Border Guard Station. If you have time, on the way back, you can visit Nuoc Moc stream in Yen Khe commune (Con Cuong) right next to the main road. This is a famous mineral water stream in western Nghe An.

If you go by bus from Vinh city to Mon Son commune, it only costs 70,000 VND - 80,000 VND. Tourists can also choose to rent a car to drive themselves, or contact the bus companies that provide tourist transport services. We chose to take a bus to Con Cuong town and rent another taxi. The cost is only about 100,000 VND.

At Pha Lai Dam, there are now quite a few specialty restaurants serving tourists. But we chose a “popular” restaurant. According to the locals, the quality of the food between “specialty” and “popular” is not much different. Every restaurant has grilled or fried mackerel, mackerel soup, but the prices are quite different. At a popular restaurant, you only need about 1.2 million VND to have a sumptuous meal for 10 people. If you do not know how to make bean sprouts and choose a restaurant, tourists can spend double the amount for a “so-so” meal.

Giang River is located in the core area of ​​Pu Mat National Park, considered the most important biosphere reserve in Vietnam. Along the river are orphaned rocks as if arranged by human hands.

Here, restaurants often offer “cruise” services to explore the Giang River. The price for each trip to the beach, about 3 km from the foot of the dam, is from 200,000 VND to 300,000 VND. If you want to go to the nearest Dan Lai village, 20 km away, you have to pay about 1.2 million VND to the boat owner.
