During a routine health check-up, a 49-year-old female patient was diagnosed with early-stage thyroid cancer that had not metastasized; the treatment success rate was over 90%.

Accidentally discovered thyroid cancer

A female patient (49 years old) went for a routine health check-up at Cua Dong General Hospital and said that she usually had a general check-up once a year, but in previous years she did not have a thyroid ultrasound. This year, she chose to have a health check-up at Cua Dong General Hospital.

Through ultrasound, the patient's thyroid was found to have 2 tumors with the risk of cancer assessed on the ultrasound results as TIRADS 3 and TIRADS 4 (Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data Systems). Therefore, the doctor ordered the patient to perform a fine needle aspiration of thyroid cells to determine whether the thyroid tumor was benign or malignant (cancerous). After examination, it was discovered that the patient had thyroid cancer, but it was still in the early stages so the treatment success rate was high.

The patient was treated with total thyroidectomy to remove the cancerous tissue. After surgery, the patient was stable and discharged from the hospital.

Master, Doctor, Doctor Thai Doan Cong - Head of General Surgery Department, Cua Dong General HospitalAccording to the latest research, the 10-year survival rate for thyroid cancer is over 90%. The treatment is highly successful, and the surgery and post-operative recovery time is quick. However, if left untreated or treated late, the tumor can grow larger and metastasize to other places such as the lymph nodes in the neck, and further away, it can be the lungs, bones, etc.

According to the Global Cancer Organization (Globocan) in 2020, thyroid cancer is one of the 10 most common cancers in Vietnam, with about 5,470 new cases each year, about 640 deaths. Thyroid cancer is more common in women than in men, more common in women aged 40-50 and men aged 60-70.

However, thyroid cancer is a very slow-growing cancer, so the prognosis is usually very good. In the early stages (tumor diameter less than 1cm), patients have almost no symptoms. When touching the neck, patients also do not feel the tumor, so regular health check-ups are necessary for early detection and timely treatment.
