Urgent investigation into boat capsizing on Thac Ba Lake.
Regarding the passenger boat sinking incident on Thac Ba Lake, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Lao Cai province requested the Provincial Police to urgently investigate the cause of the accident and strictly handle any organizations or individuals found to be in violation (if any).
At approximately 7:15 PM on February 21, 2026, a waterway traffic accident occurred on Thac Ba Lake in Lang Can village, Bao Ai commune, Lao Cai province, involving two vessels.
The ferry carrying stones, license plate YB-0919H, piloted by Mr. Nguyen Van T. (42 years old, residing in Cam Nhan commune, Lao Cai province), was transporting boulders from Luc Yen commune to Huong Ly Port. The ferry collided with a passenger vessel, license plate YB-0876H, piloted by Mr. Trieu Duc N. (31 years old, residing in Cam Nhan commune), traveling from Yen Binh commune to Cam Nhan commune.
The boat was carrying 22 passengers and 23 crew members along with the captain. The accident caused the vessel to sink, resulting in one death and five missing persons. Authorities are currently searching for the missing victims.
Immediately after the incident occurred, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Lao Cai province, issued an urgent document directing prompt action to address the accident.
The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested the Provincial Police to take the lead and coordinate with relevant agencies, units, and localities to urgently mobilize forces and resources to assist in overcoming the consequences of the accident. They were also instructed to promptly investigate and clarify the cause of the accident and strictly handle any organizations or individuals found to be in violation (if any).
At the same time, the police force was instructed to strengthen patrols and inspections of waterway transport activities. The focus was on strictly handling violations related to the technical safety conditions of vessels, alcohol levels, and carrying more passengers than permitted.
In addition, the People's Committee of Lao Cai province requested the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and political and social organizations of the province; the Provincial Military Command; and the People's Committees of Bao Ai and Cam Nhan communes to urgently address the waterway traffic accident that occurred on Thac Ba Lake in Bao Ai commune.
