The unfulfilled dream of a university education for an orphaned girl who died in a serious traffic accident.

Thu Giang November 11, 2025 07:48

It was thought that the gates of university would open up a bright future, but for Nguyen Thi Hoai (born in 2007, from Trung Long hamlet, Xuan Lam commune (formerly Thanh Yen commune, Thanh Chuong district), Nghe An province), the path to university was blocked by a double tragedy: a serious traffic accident and an extremely tragic family situation. Hoai excelled in the university entrance exam with a total score of over 27 points in the humanities and social sciences, but that dream is now more fragile than ever…

The physical pain and medical expenses are considerable.

On the morning of November 9, 2025, while traveling from the former Nam Dan area back home, a sudden traffic accident struck, transforming Hoai from a hopeful schoolgirl into a patient suffering extreme pain.

Hoai received emergency first aid and was taken to Hospital 115 in Nghe An. The scan results shocked her family: Hoai had a triple femur fracture – a complex injury requiring meticulous surgery and a long recovery time.

At the same time, she broke one of her front teeth and two others became loose, significantly affecting her daily life and mental well-being. That same afternoon, doctors performed emergency surgery.

However, given the complexity of the injury, according to information from Hoai's family, the initial surgical costs and especially the costs for post-operative treatment and long-term physical therapy are expected to reach tens, even hundreds of millions of VND, completely beyond the family's ability to pay...

The will to overcomeovercoming adversity

While physical trauma was the immediate pain, Hoai's family circumstances were a tragedy that lasted throughout her childhood. She was orphaned at a young age, relying on her maternal aunt, Nguyen Thi Vinh. Ten years ago, her stepfather, her aunt's husband, also passed away, leaving her aunt to single-handedly raise and educate Hoai. Her aunt was not only a relative but also her sole pillar of support and greatest source of emotional strength.

Overcoming all hardships, Hoai has demonstrated extraordinary resilience through her studies. She has always been a diligent and excellent student at school. Her aunt's greatest pride is Hoai's outstanding achievement in the recent university entrance exam, scoring over 27 points across the three subjects of Literature, History, and Geography, opening up opportunities for her to change her life and repay her hardworking aunt.

However, due to extremely difficult circumstances, Hoai was unable to enroll on time. The 18-year-old's dream of attending university had to be put on hold, and now it faces the risk of being permanently shattered.

Ms. Tran Thi Lan Anh, a former teacher of Hoai at Nguyen Sy Sach High School, shared with sorrow:Hoai is very well-behaved, kind, and helpful to others. She is trusted and loved by her friends and is a role model of perseverance. She studied well and passed the entrance exam for the Educational Psychology Department at Vinh University. Her university admission is a source of pride for the school; however, due to family circumstances, she had to stop her studies to work part-time to support herself. I was deeply saddened to hear about her accident. When the accident happened, she was very scared, cried, and called me for help."

Tragedy upon tragedy

The most heartbreaking thing is that the accident happened at a time when Hoai's aunt – her last remaining support – was also suffering from a debilitating illness. Currently, Hoai's aunt is also battling a serious disease and requires long-term treatment in the hospital. Both of their only remaining relatives are now confined to hospital beds, with neither having the health or means to earn money to cover the expenses.

The burden of medical expenses for Hoai's femur surgery and treatment, plus the cost of treating her aunt, has pushed this small family into complete destitution and despair.

Mr. Nguyen Thu Kiem, Deputy Secretary of the Party Branch and Head of Trung Long Hamlet, Xuan Lam Commune, said: "Ms. Nguyen Thi Vinh's family is already facing difficult circumstances, primarily relying on agriculture for their income. Ms. Vinh has been ill for many years and frequently hospitalized for treatment. Now, her granddaughter, Nguyen Thi Hoai, has been involved in a traffic accident, adding to their already dire situation. We hope that kindhearted people will join hands to help Ms. Vinh's family and Hoai overcome this hardship soon..."

Nguyen Thi Hoai is an inspiring example of resilience in overcoming difficult circumstances. She tried her best to reach the doors of university, but fate was cruel. Now, only the collective support of the community can help her overcome this ordeal, regain her health and mobility, and continue to pursue her unfinished educational aspirations.

The spirit of "mutual support" and "helping those in need" is a beautiful tradition of the Vietnamese people. We earnestly call upon agencies, organizations, philanthropists, benefactors, and compassionate individuals near and far to join hands and extend a helping hand to Hoai. Every act of sharing, however small, at this time is not only material support but also invaluable spiritual medicine, giving Hoai more strength to fight her illness and maintain her faith in the future.
