Four individuals have been charged and arrested for extorting money from rice harvesting machine operators.
(Baonghean.vn) - On June 23, the People's Procuracy of Do Luong district approved the decision to initiate a criminal case, indict the defendants, and approve the temporary detention order for 4 individuals involved in extorting and threatening owners of rice harvesting machines.
The arrested individuals include: Nguyen Xuan Viet (born 1987, residing in Hamlet 15, Thuong Son Commune, Do Luong District); Dang Van Sen (born 1980, residing in Hamlet 11, Quang Son Commune, Do Luong District); Nguyen Cong Quyet (born 1990); and Le Van Phu (born 1990), both residing in Hamlet 14, Thinh Son Commune, Do Luong District, on charges of "Extortion".

During questioning at the investigative agency, the suspects confessed: In early June 2016, Mr. Nguyen Cong Ky (born in 1966, residing in Hamlet 8, Thai Son Commune, Do Luong District), the owner of a multi-purpose rice harvesting machine, along with three other workers, were harvesting rice for Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai in a field in Hamlet 7, Thuong Son Commune. Seeing this, the four suspects threatened and demanded that Mr. Ky pay protection money of 10 million VND for the entire season or 30,000 VND per sao (approximately 1000 square meters) of rice.
Out of fear and a desire to conduct his business peacefully, on June 9th, Ky contacted Viet and his accomplices to pay protection money and requested a further reduction to 4 million VND, which the group agreed to.
Upon receiving the report, the Do Luong District Police issued an urgent arrest warrant for 4 suspects for the crime of extortion. During a search of the suspects' residences, the investigating agency seized 7 swords and knives of various types; 9 iron pipes; and 265 FIOCCHI-SKEET bullets.
It is known that these individuals all lacked stable employment, lived in gangs, and caused disorder in many communes in the Do Luong district. The case is currently under investigation and the file is being finalized for prosecution according to the law.
