There are no Ha Giang rock apples, only Chinese apples.
Although the seller claimed the apples were grown in Ha Giang, local authorities confirmed that Ha Giang does not grow "stone apples"; these are Chinese apples.
For many years now, around this time, the domestic fruit market has seen the appearance of many different types of apples. In the northern mountainous provinces, in addition to the very familiar wild apple, traders also mention a type called "stone apple" from Ha Giang.

These apples come in both large and small sizes, and their skin isn't shiny, leading consumers to believe they are of Vietnamese origin. They are widely sold in markets for 10,000-30,000 VND/kg and are in high demand. Even on online forums, they are frequently advertised as originating from Quan Ba, Ha Giang, grown by locals on rocky mountains and in forests, making them delicious and clean. Consequently, the price is quite high, at 45,000 VND/kg.
To add credibility, many online sellers even take pictures of freshly picked apples, still with their stems and leaves attached, and advertise them as delicious, clean specialties from the highlands, while emphatically stating, "This type of apple is only found in Vietnam; China cannot grow it."
At this time of year, many of these apples are sold in markets like Nghia Tan, Dong Tac, and Kim Lien in Hanoi, as well as along streets such as Ho Tung Mau, Giai Phong, and Nguyen Xien. From the outside, these apples have a reddish-purple skin, sometimes with green patches due to unripeness. They are quite sweet, juicy, and very crisp. However, what is the true origin of these apples, and are they really a specialty of Ha Giang, grown by locals in Quan Ba as vendors claim?
At some markets in Ha Giang province, a type of "stone apple" is being sold for 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg. Sellers claim that these apples are grown in Quan Ba and Dong Van districts, but when asked about the specific growing location, they give vague answers. Furthermore, many Facebook account holders are openly selling this type of apple and claiming they can sell it in large quantities.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ha Giang province confirmed that no area in the province grows this type of apple. The head of the Ha Giang Sub-Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries Product Quality Management also stated that all traders in the area confirm that these apples are imported from China.
