Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes his old club's interest in Anthony Gordon has had positive benefits, despite a failed summer 2024 transfer.

Liverpool were close to signing the Newcastle United winger for £75m and sending Joe Gomez to the Magpies for £45m, but things fell apart at the last minute.

Anthony Gordon remains at Newcastle for now, and Mark Lawrenson hopes Liverpool will rekindle their interest in the England international in the summer transfer window of 2025. He believes that pursuing Gordon not only demonstrates Liverpool's vision but also creates a positive competitive dynamic for other players in the squad.

"Gordon is a player Liverpool will certainly continue to monitor," said Lawrenson. "He is technically excellent and has learned to play more effectively. He understands the demands of the game and has impressive pace."

Lawrenson also believes that Gordon's presence has created competition for Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo, as they have to think about their future and their place in the squad if the player joins Liverpool. That makes both of them work harder to maintain their form.

Despite the collapse of Gordon's deal and the failure to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, Liverpool have been in fine form with the only addition being Federico Chiesa from Juventus. Under manager Arne Slot, "The Kop" are leading the Premier League table, with notable performances from Diaz and Gakpo.
