Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes his old club's interest in Anthony Gordon has yielded positive results, even though the 2024 summer transfer deal fell through.

Liverpool came very close to signing Newcastle United winger for £75 million, and also bringing Joe Gomez to the Magpies for £45 million, but everything fell apart at the last minute.

Currently, Anthony Gordon remains at Newcastle, and Mark Lawrenson hopes that Liverpool will rekindle their interest in the English player during the summer transfer window of 2025. He believes that pursuing Gordon would not only demonstrate Liverpool's vision but also create positive competition among other players in the squad.

"Gordon is a player Liverpool will certainly continue to monitor," Lawrenson commented. "He has excellent technique and has learned to play more effectively. He understands the demands and has impressive speed."

Lawrenson also suggested that Gordon's presence created competitive pressure for Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo, as they had to think about their future and their place in the team if he joined Liverpool. This forced both of them to work harder to maintain their form.

Despite the failed deal with Gordon and the unsuccessful attempt to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, Liverpool have continued to perform well with their only new addition being Federico Chiesa from Juventus. Under manager Arne Slot, "The Kop" are leading the Premier League table, with notable performances from Diaz and Gakpo.
