The US destroyer USS Mahan fired three warning shots at four Iranian fast attack craft after they approached at high speed near the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reported today, citing two US defense officials.
The incident occurred on January 7th, whenThe USS Mahan maintains radio communication with ships of the Force.The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) did not respond to requests to slow down, and continued to question the Mahan, according to reports.The officials spoke on condition of anonymity.The Iranian ships came within 800 meters of Mahan, even though it was escorted by two US military vessels.
In that situation,The American ship fired warning shots, and Navy helicopters also dropped smoke flares before firing.
An official said similar incidents happen frequently.The warning shots were just one of seven incidents between the Mahan and Iranian ships over the weekend, but the remaining incidents were reported to be safe.
Last July, US President-elect Donald Trump vowed that any Iranian ship that provoked the US Navy in the Gulf would be "blown up."
