The scenario of relocating US military bases: A new security challenge for Russia?
Faced with deep disagreements with traditional allies, President Donald Trump may redeploy US military bases from Central Europe to the Baltic region and Poland. This is the assessment of experts, warning of geopolitical implications and direct security pressure on Russia's western borders.
In an interview with RIA Novosti on April 14, Alexander Dynkin, President of the National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, offered insightful analysis of the potential military strategy under President Donald Trump.
According to Dynkin, President Trump may withdraw U.S. armed forces from allied nations that do not meet Washington's expectations regarding defense budgets or military support. The crucial question is, where will these forces go?
"If they withdraw their troops to US territory, that would be a positive signal from Russia's national interests. However, if they move to the territories of 'vanguard groups' like Poland and the three Baltic states, the situation will be very different," expert Dynkin commented.
The Russian scholar recalled that countries like Poland and the Baltic states have long been lobbying for the US to establish permanent bases on their territory. Even during President Trump's first term, Warsaw openly expressed its desire to establish a large-scale military base called "Fort Trump."
Poland's willingness to pay billions of dollars to maintain a US military presence signals a shift in the security structure in Eastern Europe, where these countries view Washington as their sole security guarantor rather than collective European mechanisms.
Expert Dynkin emphasized that this quartet of nations (Poland and the three Baltic states) is demonstrating the toughest stance towards Russia in the region. He warned of a "shortcoming of strategic culture" in handling potential conflicts, which could lead to dangerous miscalculations.
Relocating US military bases closer to the Russian border would pose a direct threat to the security of the Kaliningrad region – a strategically important Russian territory; increase pressure on defense systems along the western borders; and disrupt the strategic balance that has existed for decades in Europe.
President Trump's recent statements about considering withdrawing from NATO, after the alliance refused to support Washington in its campaign in Iran, caused a stir. He called the allies' response an "indelible stain," and asserted that the US did not need help from countries that "always seek to evade responsibility."
Faced with this prospect, European officials are extremely uneasy. Dutch Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Dylan Yesilgöz-Zegerius stated that Europe fears a US troop withdrawal. He emphasized that despite existing rifts, Europe still needs the US presence to maintain stability. Conversely, the US also needs a stable Europe as a strategic partner.
