On February 20th, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court held a first-instance trial and sentenced the female defendant Tran Thi Binh, born in 1967 and residing in Quang Binh province, to 3 years in prison (suspended sentence) for the crime of "Organizing others to flee abroad".

According to the indictment, for the purpose of making money, from July 2014 until her arrest on April 7, 2016, Tran Thi Binh acted as a middleman, introducing and facilitating visa applications for individuals (whose identities are unknown) to Canada for a fee of 21,000 USD - 23,000 USD per person. These individuals then absconded and remained in Canada to seek illegal employment.

During the aforementioned period, Binh processed applications for 13 people, collecting nearly $240,000. Binh handed over the money to other individuals, keeping $55,000 for himself.

After the case was exposed, Binh and her family partially compensated for the damages. On the day of the trial on February 20th, the court determined that Nguyen Thi Binh had benefited by 416 million VND.
