Strange stone grows and swells on its own
In Romania, in the village of Costesti, there is a strange type of rock called Trovants. Trovants are the most mysterious rocks in the world, attracting great interest from scientists.
The amazing thing is that during and after every rain, the Trovants rocks in Costesti village grow like mushrooms. The rocks just grow and swell in a strange way.
Scientists set up automated cameras and found them to be living organisms, growing from the soil. In Romanian, Trovants means sand cement. However, it does not mean that it is made from a mixture of cement and sand used in construction.

This type of rock was formed tens of millions of years ago in a way that scientists are still debating. Most opinions say that earthquakes created this type of rock and that due to geological formation, it has been rising to the surface for millions of years. What the villagers all know is that Trovants only grow when it rains.

Rocks of all shapes and sizes raced to grow throughout the region. People called it the time when rocks "come of age". Geologists have studied this type of rock quite thoroughly and have published research papers. Accordingly, inside the Trovants rocks is a hard rock core, but the shell is made of sand.

This is the result of the carbonization process that occurred millions of years ago. More specifically, at the beginning of the sedimentary rock formation stage. During the sandstone concretion process, rocks with strange shapes were created, due to uneven cement secretion.

The reason they grow so large is because they absorb so much water. People have measured their incredible size after the rain has stopped for a while. Some rocks have doubled in size from their original size. Large rocks can swell up to a meter in circumference.
Scientists are currently studying the formation of Trovants rocks thanks to the special specimens available.
