The Vang Phao resettlement area in Muong Tip commune (Ky Son district) was started after a large crack was discovered on the mountaintop running along Vang Phao village, threatening the safety of all residents. In early August 2024, the Ky Son authorities began preparations to relocate the entire Vang Phao village to the new location.

On August 9, 2024, at the village's cultural center in Vang Phao, officials from the Muong Tip Commune People's Committee were holding a meeting with all residents to prepare for relocation to a new place of residence. The meeting was attended by 70 households from Vang Phao village. The meeting reiterated the necessity of relocation as the mountain fissure deepened. It also disseminated the district People's Committee's directives regarding procedures, statistical documentation, and commitments from residents before moving to the Vang Phao resettlement area. 100% of the households signed commitments to relocate to the new place of residence. In 2019, Ky Son district implemented a project to build the Vang Phao resettlement area to urgently respond to the appearance of a large fault line running along the mountainside, about 1 km from the Vang Phao residential area. The mountain fault line threatened landslides and mountain collapse, endangering the lives and property of 68 households in Vang Phao village. By 2024, two more households had separated, bringing the total number of households in Vang Phao village to 70. Photo: Hoai Thu
