We went to Minh Chau village (Tri Le commune - Que Phong district) to meet Mrs. Vu Y Chia. Everyone in Tri Le commune knows her family because for decades she has possessed the most unique hair in this border region.

In the small house, Mrs. Vu Y Chia was sitting warming herself by the fire. Since she couldn't speak Vietnamese, we had to rely on her son, Mr. Tho Ba Sinh, who works at a school in the commune, to translate for us. She said that she didn't even know her exact birth year; according to her documents, it was 1925, and she only remembered that she had lived through more than 90 rice seasons in the fields.

At the age of 60, for some inexplicable reason, while the hair of her peers was falling out excessively, her hair began to grow longer. Strangely, the strands of hair intertwined like strings. Believing this to be a good omen, Mrs. Vu Y Chia left it as it was, cutting off the shorter strands and only growing the long, intertwined ones. Since then, over 32 years later, her hair has grown to nearly 6 meters long.

Although over 90 years old, according to her son, Mrs. Y Chia still works in the fields as usual. When working hard, she puts her hair in a large, sewn bag and carries it on her back. "I have to carry it like that; there's no other way. Sometimes it's inconvenient because the hair is like a basket on my back," said Mr. Tho Ba Sinh.

Going to work with long hair was already hard, but washing it was even harder. She did everything herself, without bothering anyone. According to her, she only took her hair out of the bag on her back to wash it when the sun was very strong. She usually washed it around 8 a.m., but then had to sit in the sun until 12 noon for her hair to dry completely.

Grandfather Vu Y Chia's hair is the pride of his entire family and village. According to Tho Ba Sinh, when his hair started growing long, no one dared to suggest cutting it. Everyone believed it was a blessing from him for his descendants.

Even now, at over 90 years old, her hair continues to grow longer and shows no signs of stopping.
