The earthquake and tsunami on Sulawesi island last week caused heavy human and material damage to Indonesia. |
A shallow earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck at 6:59 a.m. local time about 40 kilometers (25 miles) off Sumba Island, an island with a population of about 750,000.
About 15 minutes later, a second earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude occurred in the same area at a depth of 30 km.
Sumba is about 1,600 km south of Sulawesi island, which was hit by a double earthquake and tsunami last week that killed more than 800 people.
There are currently no tsunami warnings or reports of casualties or damage from the two latest earthquakes.
