Lamine Yamal criticizes the wave of Islamophobia: A disgrace to Spanish football.
Eighteen-year-old star Lamine Yamal publicly condemned racist chants directed at Muslims, while affirming his pride in his heritage and faith.
Lamine Yamal, a rising star in Spanish football, has directly confronted and exposed the racism plaguing stadiums in Spain. This courageous act by the young Barcelona player comes amidst widespread anti-Islamic chants, shocking international public opinion and raising serious questions about the management of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

The atmosphere at RCDE Stadium is toxic.
The incident erupted as early as the 10th minute of the match between Spain and Egypt. In the stands of Espanyol's home stadium, a large group of fans chanted derogatory slogans directly targeting the Muslim community. This hateful message was repeated repeatedly, turning the match into an atmosphere filled with hostility.
Despite the organizers' efforts to broadcast warnings via loudspeakers and large screens, the wave of attacks showed no signs of abating. Sadly, the victim of these insults was Lamine Yamal, who is directly contributing to bringing glory to his national team. As a Muslim, the 18-year-old star was forced to endure disrespect from his own fans.
A powerful voice stemming from pride in faith.
Not remaining silent in the face of insults, Lamine Yamal chose social media as a tool to respond forcefully. On his personal Instagram page, he stated: "I am a Muslim, thank God. Using religion to mock others in a stadium only shows you are ignorant and racist."
This statement is not just a personal defense, but also a voice representing millions of people of the same faith who are facing discrimination. Yamal has always been proud of his heritage, with his father being Moroccan and his mother from Equatorial Guinea. Previously, he moved many when he waited for his grandmother to arrive from Morocco before signing with Barca, and he maintained his observance of Ramadan despite the high intensity of his professional career.

A pressing issue threatens the 2030 World Cup.
This is not the first time Spanish football has faced a racism scandal. Before Yamal, stars like Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) and Inaki Williams (Athletic Bilbao) were also frequent victims of racist abuse. Yamal himself was also insulted at the Bernabeu in 2024.
This incident is even more serious as Spain is preparing to co-host the 2030 World Cup with Morocco – a predominantly Muslim country. The wave of anti-Islam sentiment on home soil is a major blow to the credibility and commitment to anti-discrimination that the RFEF (Spanish Football Federation) has made to FIFA.
Immediately after the incident, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez publicly condemned it, asserting that it was the act of a minority group. Currently, Catalan police are investigating to prosecute those involved on hate crimes. Without strong and thorough disciplinary measures, Spanish football will struggle to escape the label of "global shame" in the eyes of the international community.
