First-ever laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery performed using 3D technology.

For the first time, Hue Central Hospital successfully performed a 3D laparoscopic surgery for stomach cancer. The surgery took place from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on November 24th.

The patient, Mr. Bui Van S. (50 years old), residing in Nui Thanh district (Quang Nam province), had a fairly large tumor in his stomach, diagnosed as near-stage 3 cancer.

This surgery was part of a provincial-level science and technology research program, led by Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep; it was the first laparoscopic surgery in Vietnam using 3D stereoscopic imaging technology to remove tumors in cancer patients.

According to Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, while conventional laparoscopic surgery is only performed on a flat 2D screen with limited depth of field, 3D surgery provides realistic images with good magnification, allowing surgeons to clearly see lesions in the body, such as lymph nodes, blood vessels, and tumors. This makes surgery to remove tumors from stomach cancer patients much safer and more thorough. The surgery time is also faster compared to 2D laparoscopic surgery.

Currently, Hue Central Hospital uses the advanced 3D Spies endoscopic surgical system from Karl Storz (Germany).

In the future, in addition to young technicians trained in 3D technology, Hue Central Hospital will continue to apply this new technique to endoscopic surgeries on other parts of the human body.
