This is the most important Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics for high school students, with over 50 teams from countries across five continents.

Although this is the 10th time the competition has been held, it is the first time Vietnam has sent a team to participate.

Astronomy is still a relatively new science in Vietnam. It is only taught at a basic level at a few universities, such as Hanoi Pedagogical University and Quy Nhon University. In secondary schools, astronomical knowledge is only briefly mentioned in some physics or geography textbooks.

All five contestants on the team are 11th-grade students from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students (Hanoi).
