In the past, Nghi Thai rattan and bamboo weaving village (Nghi Loc district, Nghe An) was famous throughout the country. However, in recent years, the craft village has encountered difficulties and the market has shrunk. To compete, some craftsmen have followed a niche market, producing only sophisticated new products such as bookshelves, decorative hanging lamps, lamp holders, baskets of all kinds, etc. to serve the export market. In the entire Nghi Thai commune, there are 11 hamlets, of which 10 hamlets make bamboo and rattan weaving, attracting over 1,000 workers. Currently, out of nearly 1,000 workers in 10 hamlets, there are about 40 workers who regularly make sophisticated products that require high skills for export to demanding markets. A pair of lanterns (in the photo) is sold for 27,000 VND; each worker can only make 3-4 pieces/day because this product requires high meticulousness. Photo: Quang An

During the heyday of the profession, my family had more than 10 workers coming to work every day, but now there are only about 5 workers. This job requires meticulousness and hard work. Currently, every month I export more than 3,000 products to foreign countries and other localities. People in this profession also earn from 3 to 5 million VND/month, depending on the number of products. Photo: Quang An
