The White House said that during the phone call, President Obama reaffirmed the US's commitment to continue supporting those affected by violence in Syria and around the world, as well as helping to reduce pressure from the migration crisis in Europe.

The two leaders also discussed the situation in Syria and the need for concrete steps to improve access to humanitarian aid and build confidence in the political process.

Mr. Obama said that US Secretary of State John Kerry will represent Washington at the Conference on Syria and the Middle East support scheduled to be held on February 4 in London.

In addition, the two leaders also discussed plans related to the Refugee Conference that the US leader will chair, scheduled to be held at the United Nations General Assembly next September.

Also in the call, President Obama "reaffirmed US support for a strong United Kingdom in a strong European Union."

For his part, Prime Minister Cameron also updated Mr Obama on negotiations with EU leaders on reforming the terms of Britain's membership in the bloc.

Mr. Cameron assessed that the reform proposals recently announced by European Council (EC) President Donald Tusk to keep Britain in the European common home showed "real progress" in four areas where Britain needs to change, but said that there is still much work to be done.

The US has long supported Britain's central role in the EU, while warning that this "special relationship" would be shaken if London left the union./.
