Boat carrying 40 students capsizes in India, 4 people dead

A fishing boat carrying about 40 school children capsized in the Arabian Sea off the coast of the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

"The boat carrying around 40 students capsized in the sea around noon, a total of 32 were rescued," local official Prashant Narnaware said, according toCNA.

The ship encountered an accident today in the Arabian Sea off Dahanu, a coastal town in Palghar district of Maharashtra state, located about 110 km from Mumbai.

The death toll could rise as four children are still missing, a police officer said. Coast GuardIndia has diverted one of its ships and put in an aircraft and helicopters for rescue operations,” he said.

Local TV channels reported that students from Babubhai Secondary School were on a picnic at Parnaka Beach. Many of them boarded fishing boats to cruise the sea.

"Overloading was the cause of the accident, the ship tilted and then capsized in the middle of the sea. However, we will still open an investigation to find out more," police said.
