Boat capsizes in India, at least 21 people die

At least 21 people have drowned after a boat capsized off the coastal town of Tanur in Malappuram district of the southern Indian state of Kerala.

According to a spokesperson for the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, the incident occurred at around 7 p.m. on May 7. Indian authorities have dispatched a team from the National Disaster Response Force to the scene.

Reuters quoted Abdul Nazar, police chief of Malappuram district, as saying that the boat was carrying about 40 passengers when it capsized. The cause of the accident is believed to be overloading.

The exact number of victims is not yet known, the local police office admitted. About 10 passengers are being treated in hospitals and some have been released after first aid.

V Abdurahiman, Kerala state's fisheries and harbour development minister, told reporters that the death toll could rise as the boat was stuck in muddy waters. Rescuers were trying to pull the boat out to rescue those trapped inside.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences to the injured and families of those killed in the incident.
