A slip, a dry "crack" at the Wanda Metropolitano (Madrid) in May 2018, changed the course of Laurent Koscielny's career. A torn Achilles tendon meant he missed the World Cup, and the subsequent consequences brought to an end a nine-year, tumultuous relationship with Arsenal. Seven years later, at age 40, Koscielny returns to a different role: Sporting Director of FC Lorient, calm and philosophical.

The Scars of 2018: Glory Turned into a Mental Burden

The physical pain was only half the story. While his teammates lifted the trophy in Moscow, Koscielny stood on the sidelines like a guest. He admitted to the conflicting emotions few dared to express: "The 2018 World Cup will forever be a dark stain on my career. The injury was hard to accept, but the result (France winning) was even harder to accept. I have a selfish part to me..."

"I'm genuinely happy for my teammates, but at the same time, I feel disgusted... you want them to win, but deep down, a part of you also wants them to lose so that your pain is lessened." From then on, Koscielny saw football differently: ruthlessness wasn't everything; family, health, and peace were the priorities.

Escaping Emirates: alarming body condition, grueling fixture schedule.

Returning after seven months out with injury, Koscielny faced the harsh realities of the Premier League. The transitional period under manager Unai Emery was incredibly tense, and the pressure to perform forced him to take to the pitch even when he wasn't fully ready.

"I returned and had to play four matches in 13 days. For someone who had just had Achilles tendon surgery and was over 30, that was terrible... I knew that if I continued playing 40-50 matches a season, I might end up in a wheelchair." So, in the summer of 2019, he requested to return to France to play at a pace of one match per week, enjoying his final years in good health.

But Arsenal were different then. Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis were gone; the new management, Raul Sanllehi and Vinai Venkatesham, chose a pragmatic approach, seeing Koscielny as a valuable asset. Disagreements escalated, culminating in his refusal to tour the US – something unprecedented for a model captain: "That's the only way they'll listen to me." Ultimately, Arsenal sold him to Bordeaux for €5 million.

Controversial debut video: a PR blunder and an apology.

Even more controversial than the transfer itself was the video in Bordeaux: Koscielny taking off his Arsenal shirt to reveal his new shirt underneath. For the Arsenal community, it was a fatal blow to cherished memories.

Looking back, he said: "I understand the fans' reaction... It wasn't my idea, but I agreed to do it without thinking it through. I apologized immediately afterward... That video shouldn't erase nine memorable years of my life."

Lorient: Sustainable projects and people-first selection.

After retiring, Koscielny returned to Lorient – ​​the club that brought him into the spotlight – as Sporting Director. His goal was simple: to bring the club back to Ligue 1 and maintain that position. His key word was "sustainability": "Ambition is good, but realism and humility are far better."

Koscielny's approach to team building doesn't stop at data or highlight clips. "Knowing the kind of person you're recruiting is just as important as the numbers," he says. Interviews go straight to the core motivations: "Why did you start playing football?", "What are your dreams?", "How do you plan to achieve them?" – to identify resilience, passion for the game, and cultural fit.

Lorient shares ownership with Bournemouth (billionaire Bill Foley), creating a pipeline of players and managerial expertise from the Premier League. Last summer, Koscielny tried to bring Olivier Giroud to Lorient: "I know he wanted to return to Europe... but in the end he chose Lille. Anyway, that shows our ambition."

From his Achilles' heel to the tumultuous ending in London, Koscielny chose a different path: stepping back to build a team that knew who they were, what they wanted to be, and what they were willing to endure.
