Leicester win the Premier League: Ranieri's spectacular revenge.

April 28, 2016 10:21

What people used to think of Claudio Ranieri was a manager who had only won two trophies in the last 30 years. But now, the Italian strategist can think about a change as the opportunity to win the Premier League is very close.

The nickname "The Tinkerman" became associated with Ranieri due to his frequent squad rotations during his time managing Chelsea. Later, the strategist was also called "The Walking Dead" when the Stamford Bridge club approached Jose Mourinho.

It's no longer something to be ridiculed for.

When Leicester appointed the 64-year-old manager last summer, Gary Lineker, a former player for the club, expressed his displeasure with one adjective: "Uninspired." Tony Cottee, another former player, considered it a gamble.

Now, things have changed. Ranieri is no longer just a handyman, as Leicester's success this season has been based on a relatively unchanged squad. He won't be a walking corpse either, as his value has increased significantly with their journey to the Champions League next season.

And his pupils like Jamie Vardy, N'Golo Kante, and Riyad Mahrez were anything but lacking in inspiration. They flourished under Ranieri's reign. The Italian coach's calm demeanor helped Leicester effortlessly relieve the pressure in one of the craziest Premier League title races in history.

After disappointment comes the peak.

Ranieri's coaching career has been a remarkable journey. He has managed 16 different teams over 30 years, with a long list of big names like Napoli, Roma, Inter, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and, among them, numerous failures. The lowest point in his career was the Greek national team's defeat against the underdog Faroe Islands.

Yet, owner Vichai's decision to appoint Ranieri turned out to be a wise one. First of all, the 64-year-old coach is very adaptable. Having worked in France, Italy, Spain, Greece, and England itself, he had no difficulty with the job at King Power Stadium. His extensive experience was also sufficient to help his players overcome the shock of Pearson's departure. Instead of making his own mark, Ranieri sought to win the trust of his players before making any changes. Defender Fuchs shared: “Before the season, Ranieri rarely supervised everything. He only offered suggestions and ideas about his philosophy to help us play better.”

Leicester started the season with a 4-2 victory over Sunderland, then went unbeaten in their first seven games. After a 2-5 defeat to Arsenal, Ranieri's team went on a 10-game unbeaten run. That's the form of a champion.

In Italy, Ranieri was only considered a second-rate coach. But this doesn't mean he lacked talent. At Leicester, Ranieri dared to make Kante, a relatively unknown player, a key figure in midfield, instead of Gokhan Inler, a star who had played for Udinese and Roma. While the first half of the season was marked by attacking prowess, in the second half Ranieri strengthened the defense with key players like Wes Morgan and Kasper Schmeichel.

In November 2014, Ranieri was considered an unlucky choice for the Greek national team. Now, however, he is a lucky name for Leicester.

16During his 30 years as a manager, Ranieri has led a total of 16 different clubs.

5Ranieri has worked in five different countries, including France, Italy, Spain, Greece, and the United Kingdom.

2Throughout his career, Ranieri has only won two major titles: the Italian Cup in 1995-96 and the Copa del Rey in 1998-99.
