This profession arose from the regulation that private cars must carry at least three people to travel on major roads in Jakarta (Indonesia) during rush hour.

In Jakarta, Indonesia, there's a peculiar job that attracts many street children: being a passenger assistant. Just sitting in a vehicle earns money – it sounds simple, but this job is fraught with danger for children.

On the main roads of Jakarta, Indonesia, you'll easily spot children and women with small children standing in long lines, soliciting drivers who need extra passengers to meet the city's traffic regulations.

Many children have to stand on the streets for hours to "find work".

On average, these passenger assistants can earn 200,000 Indonesian Rupiah (equivalent to over 300,000 VND) a day. For street children, this is indeed a good job to earn extra income. However, behind this unusual profession lies a dark truth.

According to Indonesian police investigations, the street children and even infants involved in this work belong to criminal gangs. The ringleaders hire them to stand on the streets for hours to solicit customers. The women carrying the babies are actually just "stepmothers." Because drivers often dislike the sound of crying children in their cars, the gangs even give the babies sedatives to make their work easier.
