Format for the 2026 AFC U23 Championship Finals
The 2026 AFC U23 Championship will take place in January 2026, featuring players born on or after January 1, 2003. Teams will play a round-robin format in the group stage, with the top four teams and four second-place teams advancing to the quarterfinals. This year's tournament will not count as a qualifying round for the 2028 Olympics.
According to the schedule, the quarter-finals will take place on January 16th and 17th, the semi-finals on January 20th, the third-place match on January 23rd, and the final on January 24th, 2026. The matches will be held at four stadiums in Riyadh and Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).
Group A includes Vietnam, along with host country Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Kyrgyzstan. Group B consists of Japan, Qatar, UAE, and Syria. Group C includes Uzbekistan, South Korea, Iran, and Lebanon. Group D is a competition between Iraq, Australia, Thailand, and China.
This is the sixth time the Vietnam U23 team has participated in the AFC U23 Asian Championship finals. The team's best achievement was finishing as runners-up in 2018. In the two most recent tournaments, the Vietnam U23 team reached the quarter-finals.
Japan is the most successful team in the tournament with two titles in 2016 and 2014. Within Southeast Asia, the Vietnam U23 team still has the best results in this competition.
