Liverpool were held to a draw by a third-division team at Anfield.

On the evening of January 8th, Liverpool disappointed by drawing 0-0 with League Two side Plymouth Argyle at Anfield in the third round of the FA Cup.

Manager Jurgen Klopp fielded the youngest starting lineup in Liverpool's history, with the average age of the 11 players in red shirts being just 21 years and 296 days. Despite playing with a young team, Liverpool still demonstrated superior class at Anfield.

The home team controlled possession for over 80% of the first half, but were powerless against a team three divisions below them. Liverpool's best chance came from Sheyi Ojo's run, but he missed a close-range header.

Liverpool had a goal disallowed by the referee after Divock Origi fouled Gary Miller and then scored against Plymouth. After the break, manager Jurgen Klopp decided to bring on his three key players, Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana, and Roberto Firmino, hoping to decide the match.

Sturridge had three dangerous chances, but all his shots went wide. The goalless draw means Liverpool will have to play a replay at Plymouth's Home Park, which is undesirable given the packed fixture schedule.

Plymouth are playing in League Two (below the Premier League, Championship, and League One). But with a massed defense, they frustrated Liverpool. One of the key factors in the visitors' successful draw was the radical changes made to the lineup by manager Jurgen Klopp.

The German strategist will face criticism for his selection today, having made 10 changes to the starting lineup. Klopp seemed confident in his young players, or perhaps he believed that the three star players brought on in the second half were enough to help Liverpool create a breakthrough. However, Klopp's choice also meant Liverpool had to expend energy playing another away game at a time when the team had already played a match every three days.
