Chile eliminated Portugal on penalties, advance to the final.

The Chilean men's football team defeated Portugal 3-0 in a penalty shootout in the semi-final of the Confederations Cup.

Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo became the hero for Chile when he successfully saved all three penalties from the Portuguese strikers. Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho, and Nani all suffered setbacks due to the Manchester City goalkeeper's excellent judgment and reflexes, while Cristiano Ronaldo didn't get a chance to shoot as he was scheduled for the fifth round.

In contrast to Portugal's zero penalty shootout success rate, Chile scored in all three of their first attempts. Arturo Vidal, Charles Aranguiz, and Alexis Sanchez all converted their penalties, sending the Copa America champions into the 2017 Confederations Cup final.

Before winning on penalties, Chile also had more dangerous attacking opportunities. The video assistant referee system made a mistake by failing to detect a clear foul by Jose Fonte on Francisco Silva inside the Portuguese penalty area. Vidal and Martin Rodriguez also twice threatened the European champions with shots that hit the post.

Contrary to expert predictions, Chile played slightly better than Portugal from the very first minutes. Goalkeeper Ruo Patricio was forced to make an early save when he rushed out to catch the ball right at Eduardo Vargas' feet. Shortly after, Aranguiz had a header and a volley, both of which went wide of the Portuguese goal.

The European champions had almost only one dangerous chance in the first half: Andre Silva's shot towards Bravo. It wasn't until the beginning of the second half that the team from the Iberian Islands had a second opportunity with Andre Gomes' shot going wide.

After creating a scoring opportunity for Andre Silva, Ronaldo played quietly until midway through the second half, when the number 7 star unleashed a shot straight at Bravo. The Portuguese captain had another free-kick, a header, and a shot that deflected off an opposing defender, but none were successful.

Chile became significantly more dangerous in the two extra time periods. Sanchez threatened Portugal with a header that narrowly missed the target, before...The referee refused to award the South American team a penalty after Fonte fouled Silva. Following that, Vidal's shot hit the right post of the Portuguese goal, and Rodriguez's rebound struck the crossbar.

Ronaldo was unable to help Portugal overcome Chile.

Having missed their chance to win in 120 minutes of play, Chile capitalized on their advantage in the penalty shootout. A perfect 100% penalty save secured an early 3-0 victory for the Copa America champions.

In the final, Chile will face the winner of the Germany-Mexico match. Both the final and the third-place playoff will take place on July 2nd.
