Twins are less likely to die in their youth and middle age than others because of the support and help they give each other.

Twins often live long lives because of the support and help they give each other.

American scientists, the authors of the paper published in the journal PLoS ONE, reached this conclusion. This research can be found in the article on New Scientist.

Doctors examined data on twins born in Denmark between the 1870s and 1900s. Comparing morbidity and mortality rates in this group and the general population, researchers determined that "twins have a protective effect": such individuals are less likely to die from unexpected causes (due to non-hereditary diseases). In this case, females were generally healthier than males.

Researchers consider this effect a special case where social relationships positively impact human health. Similarly, marriage and the presence of close friends often contribute to longer lives and improved quality of life.
